Los Angeles Blades (1993-1997)

The Los Angeles Blades were a professional Roller Hockey (inline skating) franchise owned by Los Angeles Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss and run by his daughter Jeanie Buss. The Blades’ arch rivals, both geographically and competitively, were the Anaheim Bullfrogs. Anaheim eliminated Los Angeles in the Murphy Cup playoffs in all five seasons of the Blades’ existence.

The Chicago Cheetahs of Roller Hockey International were a short-lived in-line skating promotion that tried without much success to find an audience in the Windy City during the mid-1990’s. Former Black Hawks tough guy Al Secord skated for the Cheetahs during the 1994 season following a four-year retirement from the NHL.

1995 Buffalo Stampede Yearbook from the Roller Hockey International

Buffalo Stampede

This largely forgotten roller-blade hockey promotion appeared on the Buffalo sports scene in the summer of 1994 and claimed one of the city’s more obscure championships. Under the direction of head coach Chris McSorley, the expansion Buffalo Stampede won the Murphy Cup championship of the 24-team Roller Hockey International during their debut season in 1994. The Stampede fold after completing a second and final season in 1995.

Phoenix Cobras

The Phoenix Cobras were a short-lived pro roller hockey promotion that set up shop at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum during the summer of 1994. Cobras players were mostly minor league ice hockey players picking up a modest paycheck during their summer vacation. The Cobras’ all-time top scorer, former Harvard star Mike Vukonich, previously skated three seasons with the Phoenix Roadrunners of the International Hockey League.
