New York Rovers (1964-1965)

This 1964-65 New York Rangers farm club in the Eastern Hockey League was the last of several versions of the New York Rovers ice hockey team.  Like the original Rovers, who started out back in 1935 as a senior amateur club in the Eastern Amateur Hockey League and played until 1952, the 1964-65 Rovers traditionally played Sunday afternoon matinees at Madison Square Garden.  The team disbanded only one season.

The New York CityHawks enjoyed a brief two-year fling in the Arena Football League.  The team performed quite poorly both on the field and at the box office.  The team finished 2-12 in 1997 and 3-11 in 1998. The CityHawks marked the Arena Football League’s second failed attempt to establish a franchise in the nation’s biggest media market.  An earlier AFL franchise – the New York Knights – played a single summer at the Garden in 1988 before vanishing. New York Stars Women's Basketball League

New York Stars (1978-1980)

The New York Stars were one of the earliest women’s professional basketball teams in the United States, formed in 1978 at the inception of the Women’s Professional Basketball League (1978-1981).  Although the Stars would exist for just two years, the team enjoyed a number of highlights. These included a league championship, doubleheaders with the New York Knicks in the Madison Square Garden, and a pair of identical twins who were cast in national advertising campaigns.
