California Dreams

The California Dreams were a Long Beach-based entry in the Women’s Basketball League during the winter of 1979-80. Team officials infamously enrolled Dreams players at the John Robert Powers Charm School early in the season. That money would have been better spent on the players themselves. Paychecks stopped clearing after a couple of months and the Dreams died in February 1980 without managing to complete their season schedule.

Nebraska Wranglers

The Nebraska Wranglers were a one-year wonder in the Women’s Professional Basketball League, the first effort to establish a nationwide women’s pro hoops league.  The Wranglers joined the WPBL just in time to participate in its third and final season in the winter of 1980-81. The expansion club would go on to win the league championship in April 1981. But an off-the-court tragedy – the midseason murder of Wrangler Connie Kunzmann – overshadowed the team’s triumph.
