In the spring of 1999, Glens Falls, New York lost its longtime minor league hockey club, the Adirondack Red Wings. For 20 seasons, the Wings were the top farm club of the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. The team won four Calder Cups as champions of the American Hockey League during the 1980’s and early 1990’s and routinely packed the small city’s 4,800-seat Civic Arena in those years. Into the void left by the Red Wings stepped Art & Lori Shaver, who moved their United Hockey League franchise from Winston-Salem, North Carolina to Glens Falls in June of 1999.

Throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s, tiny Glens Falls, New York was one of the smallest cities in North America to boast of its own pro hockey team. The city of just 16,000 had not just any rinky dink club, but the top farm club of the Detroit Red Wings for 20 seasons. The Adirondack Red Wings of the American Hockey League were a great success story during the 1980’s, routinely packing Glens Falls’ 4,800-seat Civic Center.

Empire State Cobras Roller Hockey International

Empire State Cobras

The Empire State Cobras were a One-Year Wonder in Roller Hockey International during the summer of 1996. Based out of tiny Glens Falls, New York, the team seemed incompatible with the rest of Roller Hockey International, a 17-team cross-continental league that often played in huge NHL and NBA arenas. Sure enough finances turned out to be a problem. Although the club was good and won the Atlantic Division with a 16-7-5 record, the Cobras reportedly had to sell their home court advantage in the playoffs to the lower-seeded Orlando Jackals.  They lost to the eventual champion Jackals in the first round and left town shortly thereafter.
