New England Blazers / Boston Blazers (1989-1997)

The New England Blazers were an expansion entry in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League during the winter of 1989. The club played initially in the small central Massachusetts city of Worcester before moving to the Boston Garden 1992. A little over a decade after the original Blazers went out business in 1997, a re-booted version of the Blazers took the floor at Boston’s TD Garden from 2009 to 2011, albeit without the original club’s garish orange, green & white uniforms.

The Worcester Sharks were the top farm club of the NHL’s San Jose Sharks from 2006 to 2015.  The Sharks arrived in the small central Massachusetts city in 2006 from Cleveland, replacing Worcester’s previous American Hockey League franchise, the recently departed IceCats.

1998-99 Worcester IceCats Program from the American Hockey League

Worcester IceCats

The Worcester IceCats were an American Hockey League club that operated for 11 seasons in central Massachusetts. The ‘Cats operated as the top farm club of the NHL’s St. Louis Blues for most of their existence. Following the 2004-05 season, the IceCats franchise moved to Illinois and became the Peoria Rivermen. But the American Hockey League returned to Worcester’s DCU Center one year later with the arrival of the Worcester Sharks.

Worcester Counts

The Worcester Counts were a men’s minor league basketball team from central Massachusetts that lasted just a single season in the World Basketball League. The WBL had an unusual gimmick: players could be no taller than 6′ 5″. The Counts’ best known player was former University of Indiana star Keith Smart who hit the game-winning shot in the 1987 NCAA Championship game against Syracuse.
