The Fredericton Canadiens were the New Brunswick-based top farm club of the Montreal Canadiens throughout the 1990’s. The Baby Habs appeared in the American Hockey League’s Calder Cup Finals in 1995, losing in a four-game sweep to the Albany River Rats. By the end of the 1990’s, the AHL was retreating from Atlantic Canada and Fredericton’s small Aitken Centre arena was out of step with newer AHL venues. The franchise moved to Quebec City in 1999.

1981-82 Fredericton Express Program from the American Hockey League

Fredericton Express

The Fredericton Express was an American Hockey League team in the Canadian Maritime province of New Brunswick. The club was founded as an expansion team in 1981 to serve as a farm club to the NHL’s Quebec Nordiques. In 1982, the Vancouver Canucks entered a partnership with the Nordiques to jointly operate and provide prospects to the club. This two-team partnership endured until 1988, when the Nordiques shifted the franchise from Fredericton to Halifax, Nova Scotia.
